Missing Something

When we left the suite, I took the dogs from Jermaine, but I paid them and everything around me almost no attention because my mind was elsewhere. Operating on autopilot, I mumbled to Martin that I would meet him and the others in the nest and found myself outside on the deck.

The sun shone down and the warmth of the day blessed my skin despite a gentle breeze. We would arrive in Honolulu later this afternoon, which was good news for Stephanie, provided we could find her husband and eject him, but bad news for the prime minister. He would want to disembark the ship, as was his right, but once ashore he would have almost no protection at all.

His one security guard might be the best in the world, but against a sniper’s bullet he would be as effective as wet tissue. You might point out that getting killed off the ship made it not my problem, but that’s hardly an attitude I should willingly embrace.

So the clock was ticking. That’s how it felt, and I was missing something. I just didn’t know what it was and my stroll around the deck was a feeble attempt to give my brain time to consider the equation.

Something about Dale Morris being on the list of possibles for the assassin bothered me. It triggered the familiar itchy skull sensation I always get when I am seeing something significant. But why would he be the assassin? He was here for his wife, going out of his way to continue making her life a misery. When I finally caught up to him, I hoped Jermaine was around to stop me swinging something heavy at his head.

I pushed my brain to think in non-logical lines, but could find no reason why Dale Morris would want to hurt the head of a small European nation. In fact, I was willing to bet he’d never even heard of Radovan Filipovic or Molovia.

“Good morning,” said a familiar voice that broke through my concentration.

Looking to my left, I saw Justin Masters, the older gentleman with the Chelsea accent.

“Hello, Justin. Out for another stroll?”

“Indeed. Getting myself some of the good, clean ocean air. I must say I’ll be glad to dock in Hawaii. I’m finding life on the ship a little monotonous.”

The poor chap. I was all by myself when I first came on board but had the benefit of Jermaine for company even then. Plus I soon made friends, but I hadn’t thought about what it must be like for an older person travelling alone.

An idea found its way to my lips. “Would you like to come to a cocktail party? It’s happening at one o’clock. I’m going with a couple of lady friends and we could do with a dapper gentleman to escort us.”

He grinned cheekily. “Well, I can hardly turn you down now, can I?”

“Wonderful. I have some work to do right now, but I’ll come by your suite to collect you just before one. Is
